A Call for Help in Guildford
In an urgent effort to help, the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) has launched a campaign to find homes for 187 ex-commercial laying hens at risk of being slaughtered. These hens have spent the last 18 months in commercial production and are now considered past their prime. The trust is hosting a special rehoming event in Guildford this Sunday, and they are calling on local animal lovers to step forward. Interested individuals must register by 14:00 BST on Friday to participate in this life-saving initiative. The BHWT emphasizes that these hens still have much to offer and deserves a chance to enjoy their life outside a cage.
Why Adopt a Hen?
Adopting a hen can be a rewarding experience, both for the bird and the adopter. According to Andy Hill, a representative from the BHWT, many people are pleasantly surprised by the joy these animals can bring. Hens are curious creatures known for their engaging personalities. They thrive on routine and often develop a bond with their caretakers, providing companionship and entertainment. In addition, while their commercial egg-laying days may be over, they are still capable of laying an occasional egg, adding to the reasons for adoption. Giving these hens a second chance can also create a positive impact in the community.
Join the Movement for Animal Welfare
This appeal is more than just about finding homes for hens; it’s an opportunity to advocate for animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. As local communities in Surrey, including Guildford, Woking, and beyond, come together to support initiatives like this, they can foster a culture of compassion towards animals. The British Hen Welfare Trust aims to not only rescue these hens but also to educate the public about the benefits of adopting animals in need. By participating in this event or similar initiatives, individuals can make a lasting difference while enjoying the unique experience of caring for a pet hen.
