Major Building Scam Alert: Surrey Residents Urged to Check Contractors
How a ‘Professional’ Building Company Left Our Region Out of Pocket
A major fraud investigation has exposed one of the most significant construction scams to hit our region, with more than 30 homeowners across Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset reporting losses totalling nearly £500,000. South Coast Construction (Sussex) Ltd operated across our neighbourhoods, targeting families planning everything from loft conversions to full kitchen renovations and bathroom refurbishment projects. What makes this case particularly troubling is how convincingly the company presented itself. Customers reported being reassured by the firm’s professional website, displayed accreditations, and polished contracts. Sian and Simon Romsey from Southampton paid nearly £16,000 in deposits for a double-storey extension with new kitchen-diner and shower room facilities. The architect simply disappeared a week before work was scheduled to begin, having never been paid. Sussex Police confirmed they’re investigating multiple fraud allegations. The operation’s reach across our communities—from Guildford to Dorking and East Horsley—highlights how these scams don’t discriminate by postcode.
Local Residents Still Fighting to Recover Thousands
The human cost of this scam extends far beyond financial loss. Jo Amas from Burgess Hill invested nearly £12,000 towards a loft conversion for her step-mother, Fran, who had dementia and needed accessible housing after a serious fall. When Fran’s condition deteriorated and she required residential care, Jo requested the full refund promised in her contract. The company stopped all communication. “It wasn’t even my money,” Jo explained, adding that the financial stress created enormous guilt and emotional toll. Eight customers have been forced to escalate their cases to the financial ombudsman service after banks insisted the matter was civil, not criminal. Whilst 29 customers managed to recover funds through their banks—some taking up to two months of persistent calls—others remain locked in bureaucratic limbo. The situation reveals not just individual hardship but the vulnerability of families making major home improvement decisions, whether it’s a bathroom fitters project or comprehensive kitchen renovation work.
What You Should Do Before Hiring Building Contractors
For homeowners across our region planning renovation projects, this scandal offers critical lessons. First, verify accreditations directly with the issuing bodies rather than trusting website claims alone. Research contractors through multiple independent sources beyond their own testimonials. Request references from recent completed projects in your area—Woking, Horsley, and Dorking residents should ask to speak with neighbours who’ve used the same firm. Never pay substantial deposits for preliminary work without signed, detailed contracts specifying exact start dates and completion timelines. Consider paying via credit card when possible, as this provides stronger consumer protection. For bathroom fitters and kitchen renovation specialists particularly, check they’re registered with relevant professional bodies and carry appropriate insurance. If something feels rushed or unprofessional—disconnected phones, vague timelines, pressure to commit quickly—trust that instinct. Report suspected fraud to Sussex Police and Action Fraud immediately. Join local community groups on social media where residents share genuine contractor reviews. Your deposit should never vanish along with your contractor’s credibility.
